History and Heritage
Ioannina, a small city in northwestern Greece near the Albanian border, was home to Jews for more than 1,300 years from the eighth century until the present. Due to its location west of the Pindos Mountain Range, the community was isolated geographically from the mainstream of Judaism, even that within Greece. Consequently, the community developed its own traditions, customs, and minhag, (prayer rites), and remained Greek-speaking even after most other Jewish communities on Greek soil were absorbed into the traditional Sephardic world following the post-1492 influx of Spanish-speaking Jews. Yanniote Jews, as they called themselves (only the scholars used the term Romaniote) remained a small community throughout its existence, probably never numbering more than four or five thousand at its peak.

Pindus is a complex of mountains, mountain ranges, ravines and gorges. Tzoumerka is probably its most impressive mountain range. Tzoumerka or Athamanika mountains, surrounded by the rivers Arachtos, Aspropotamos (Acheloos) and their countless tributaries stand out for the wild beauty of their landscapes and the abundance of water. There, the visitor has the chance to enjoy the beauty of the nature and to get to know the locals and their traditions.
Authenticity, tradition and genuineness are the key features that the visitor of the region perceives. The traces of history at this marvelous place lead back to the mists of time, alluring the visitor to search and discover all of its aspects.
Day 10
Departure to Metsovo & Meteora
First we will visit the Aoos Springs Lake (Metsovo)
Meteora in Greek means “place suspended in the air”, and this perfectly describes these remarkable Greek Orthodox monasteries. The complex was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 and was declared an official holy place for Greece since 1995.
Aoos Lake or Lake Aoos Springs is located in the prefecture of Ioannina, about 20km northwest of Metsovo. At the springs of the Aoos River, at an altitude of 1,340 meters, their waters form the artificial lake, which serves the water supply and electrification of the surrounding areas. At the same time, it creates beautiful images, with the blue of its waters alternating with the lush landscape.
The jewel of Epirus
Metsovo, a lively mountain town in Epirus, with its diverse history, traditions and customs is a popular winter holiday destination. This tree-shaded village, retaining its traditional character, dots the mountain side below Katara Col (Katara pass) in the Mountain Range of Pindos. It is full of life throughout the year generously offering you its natural surrounding beauties. The soothing sound of water always on the move adds to the majestic atmosphere. Half hidden in the fog or wrapped in a snow blanket as winter sets in; Metsovo practically looks like a painting. (Stop for Lunch)
Few kilometers northwest of the town of Kalabaka, the impressive rocks of Meteora rise from the plains of Thessaly.
